Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Kodiak stoker ii

what does everyone store there coal in? I have been getting a ton at a time and I’m trying to find a better system then big storage totes(9- 30 gallon totes takes up a lot of space in garage.....)

I am thinking of building a 6’ X 6’ plywood storage box outside of my garage. I’m just looking for ideas.

TIA

If you have the space, a 4×8 ft (with the long side against the garage) would make good use of 4×8 ft plywood, and you'd be able to reach the backside of it easier. A bin 4×8 and 4 ft deep would hold close to 4 tons maxed out. How many tons would you want to store at once?

Keep in mind, Wet coal deliveries are potential unwanted trouble w/ outside storage and sub-freezing temps.
Then also delivery truck has to be able to chute coal from tailgate from above whatever bin wall height you go with.

I like to get my TT load in the spring and let it dry out over the summer. This year I may have to do more as the 2 ton blocks are starting to lean ... I guess a foundation is in order ... bummer. Or buy some cheap come alongs and hold it together with spit and twine. Guess which option will win?

Got bagged for years. Bulk is much cheaper. Simple design. Holds about 5 tons. Self feeding, access into the bin if needed. Detailed info...just pm me!

If you going to do a major rehabilitation of the shed you may want to consider tightening it up more or throwing a good thick clear plastic sheet on the pile and tightening the corners down with loose coal and then stuffing a dehumidifier in the opening left on the plastic sheet and then running a garden hose from the dehumidifier to a low point to let it keep running and drying the coal as you have a sealed chamber so to speak that it will be drawing the moisture from and most of them have digital controls now so they will shut off when needed at the low moisture level.

Or you can just make a mess. We call the whole coal bin mess the Taj Mahal as it has save me a fortune. Here some buck arriving ... messy again but I covered it up and I am to proud to show you the botched job ... but the coal is dry and available

I built a bin up against the back of the house where the oil tank used to be. The neat thing about this is i drilled a 45 Degree hole 6 ft long and 4in wide for a schedule 40 pipe from the bottom of the bin exiting the basement wall right above my hopper as the bin is above the basement, level with the second floor. Wala ,once the coal is in the bin ,the hopper is self feeding. Simple setup saves a ton of work filling the small hopper all the time. Plus no black coal dust to deal with as the coal moves into the hopper so slow.

If you run out of spit and twine can also use Scotch tape and clarinet reeds.

For a while I used agricultural gravity wagons to handle bulk coal, and in another house found 55-gal drums to be kind of handy. Easy to move w/a drum cart, various methods of lifting and dumping available, and also can handle outbound ash.

Thanks for the offer, friend, but at the moment I could fit all of my coal in a Radio Flyer.

This 4 x 8 bin with sloped walls at the back of the house holds a little less than 2 ton.

The coal bunker in the pole barn holds about 6 ton and i use the small loader on the JD430 to get it from there to the bin. Vacuum power takes it from the bin to the hopper.
