How much coal have you burned from the last time you cleaned the fly ash out of the stove pipe? It might be a good time to clean inside stove passages along with the stove pipe. Reduced draft from excess fly ash can cause those symptoms.

Probably about a ton. The flue was previously used with a pellet stove and seemed in relatively clean condition. I will have to climb up on the roof I guess and give it a more thorough check.

The vertical sections of stovepipe and chimney would not be an issue unless you had creosote built up before you switched to coal. Coal will dry up creosote and it can sometimes fall off in sheets to partially block the pipe. Horizontal stovepipe sections are where fly ash can build up and reduce draft. I usually check/ clean mine after 2 to 3 tons...

I will definitely double check that. Thanks for the advice. I need to get a manometer all hooked up also, but right now am in limbo as far as which stove I even want to run in that location long term. so I may end up with an entirely different piping assembly and I want to permanently affix the mano to it.

I have an Old Mill with an Old School Paragon Pct. Timer. I gave it a quick test burn and it cranked nicely. If any one wants a decent deal on a Hitzer 608 with Coaltrol, I may go back to the simplicity of a chimney stack with the Old Mill. I can't figure out this Hitzer for the life of me. Actually I may sell both Stokers and put in a Gas Furnace. If anyone picks up on this post, feel free to Share. I have the posting "Hitzer 608" in this forum.
