My mother has a condo with just under 1000sqft. She heats with forced hot air/ natural gas. Not sure what the BTU rating is on her current unit. She also has a gas hot water heater. I had thought of suggesting tying a stoker stove with a hot water coil into the duct work to heat the house and hot water. The Condo is fairly well insulated with newer doors and windows.
What stove would you suggest?

The Leisureline Independence seems like a good choice.

Wow, that sounds like a tough call. I know from past experience when you own a condo, you only own the space inside the stucture not the building it's self. I would be asking the condo association first.ASea wrote: ↑Tue. Jan. 16, 2018 9:23 pmMy mother has a condo with just under 1000sqft. She heats with forced hot air/ natural gas. Does anyone else in the association have an alternate heating appliance?

Some do have pellet stoves direct vented through the wall. There are only four units in the "Association" She is an end unit. I was thinking she could power vent the stoker under her back porch.michaelanthony wrote: ↑Thu. Jan. 18, 2018 7:53 amWow, that sounds like a tough call. It figures they allow pellet stoves lol! Is she in Mass? Mention the coal stove and see what happens, you may need protective clothing and a hard hat at that meeting.

Venting under a porch does not sound like a good idea.

For a condo where do you store the coal and how do deal with the ashes? Sounds like NG Rinnai time to me.

Even many coal forum members claim that NG is the cheapest fuel to use...ASea wrote: ↑Tue. Jan. 16, 2018 9:23 pmMy mother has a condo with just under 1000sqft. If she is living in a condo (townhouse) why would you bother ??
Coal storage, ash disposal.....the extra cost of the additional unit + hookup.....
Doesn't make any sense to me yet.
BUT.... neither will you ever find me living by choice & still with my sound mind, in a house with fuel that can go ........ BOOM !!!

Especially in MA where coal is not the cheapest. At 1000 sq ft it hardly seems worth it and there are some very strange people up there ... G'morning Doug how are you today?Even many coal forum members claim that NG is the cheapest fuel to use...

I don't see an issue, it's open underneath in the back of the house. Plenty of ventilation. Could go through the concrete side wall as it is an end unit.coaledsweat wrote: ↑Thu. Jan. 18, 2018 8:38 amVenting under a porch does not sound like a good idea.

I may have her look into it.coalnewbie wrote: ↑Thu. Jan. 18, 2018 10:02 amFor a condo where do you store the coal and how do deal with the ashes? Sounds like NG Rinnai time to me.
As far as NG being Cheaper, demand has increased. Unitil the local provider is brutal, always with the highest rates. All the hippies up here have managed to protest and prevent any new pipelines from going in.

I must be overlooking something...
If she is already heating with NG,how will spending $$ on another NG heater help ?
I am not trying to argue, just have yet to see the point.

I assumed the heat was not keeping up, she is not going to save money whatever. Assuming that a HOA will allow a coal stove in MA is a pipe dream unless Doug is on the board. He will only allow a 1300 EFM, purchased from him of course.

For ease of use i would source a bigger NG furnace. If, in fact, the existing NG furnace is undersized. Switching to coal for primary heat does not make sense living in a condo IMO. Heck you could probably find a NG furnace for a couple hundred on craigslist.
