Hi, great board, learning a lot on here! Got a question tho, on my stoker, it's 160kbtu furance, the ash builds up on end of the burner tray, then the coal doesn't slide down and pushes a little off the side,, only happens when it gets really cold, like this past week. This is a new furance to me as it has level grates as opposed to the kodak I used to have with slanted grates.

brand of the furnace? some pictures of the ash would help.
we can guide you better if we know what you are working with.
it is common on my stove for hunks of ash with some coal attached to fall off the grate. nature of the beast when running all out trying to meet heating demands in this cold.

I think that is most common with red ash coals and often can be helped or cured by reducing the air a little.

Having issues posting picture, but it's a keystocker ,. Builds up 2 " tall before falling off in to ash tub, like an ice jam,....

could be rough surface on the grate, when off, sand it down smooth. if it's been sealed, sometimes the furnace cement or sealant is not smooth
, or reduce combustion air a bit, sometimes it runs really hot too it can fuse the ash/coal and sometimes forms what we call clinkers.

Do you have a baro damper and your draft set correctly?

2X ... Mike knows his coals. Try to back off on the air. It will help a coal that is fusing togeather , and make it more an ash that will just drop off .

believe it , but last nite I backed off the feed a turn and its seems to be better this morning, baro damper and draft set correctly, but I'm wondering if because of the high winds we've been getting, if that was making it burn hotter and clumping also. was also wondering bout furnace cement, as I had it completely checked and redone last fall before I installed it.

In addition to what has already been suggested, check your draft. If your draft is too strong, it can cause the fire to continue burning vigorously after the stoker shuts off. With no movement of the fire/coal, it can fuse together and to the grates/side rails.

I had a coal sticking to grate problem with a load of red ash coal in my Keystoker 90k a while back. I tried reducing the combustion air without success. I talked to Keystoker and they recommended increasing the air. I did and the sticking problem stopped. :baby:
