The GEO unit was installed prior to my buying the home. It was installed by a local dealer who seems pretty reputable. They do not believe it's undersized, they just feel that due to the cold stretches, it can not keep up. My wife wants it to be 72 in the house, which is partly the problem I'm sure

Based on many years experience I will offer this prediction ... winter will come every year.

Overkill is good, but more overkill is much better. credit for this goes to coalnewbie who is 1 of those old guys trying to pass heating wisdom to the younger,highly educated folks.

In the old days, if it couldn't keep the house 72° with a door open it was undersized.

Everybody assumes that this GEO is functioning as good as it can when it is not proven. But, then, we are a Coal Forum.

A system that has such a high price to install , but can only blow slightly warm air has already been proven..

CN also say, if you heat with a system that only three people on the planet understand and you can't fix it yourself and the needed part is only in stock on the Pitcairn Islands..... then it can't be your only method of heat. It's that simple. It is irrelevant that Mcgeiver and Steven Hawkings could make it better, it broke once it will break again. So there may be to many bubbles in the Flugelhorn chamber leading to an entropy change .... who cares. Murphy was an optimist! Anything else is a breakdown in logic. These young whippersnappers know nothing.

If you already have NG in the home you are already paying meter charges(just for a stove) you may want to go that route if the coal thing dont work out. But whatever you do make sure its VENTED.

Probably vents through a plastic pipe but it does vent.
I had a 95% efficient condensing gas furnace that vented through a plastic pipe like a dryer. They work great. Only reason i got rid of it is i quit the Mafia gas co. They take the worlds cheapest fuel and make it expensive(around here anyway) . Bill is 3 to 4 times the price of the gas.

NG & Propain can go BOOM , hard to make coal go boom.

Yes but the point is the intake air is through that pipe also. The GEO system takes the load for the vast majority of the winter.

Don’t forget Windy them there AA/AHS high efficiency boiler units go BOOM. I understand it’s part of what makes them so much more efficient!

CJ, the difference is that the gases go BOOM & everything nearby vanishes the AA/AHS only do a loud boom that makes some repair necessary

I couldn’t resist... now that I have likely started World War III, I will have to be extra careful where I step. For all I know, there may be trolls in my basement dismantling my EFM as we speak. I best get off the chair and plant some mines out on the front lawn, trenches to dig and LZ’s to set up. My Jack Russell has strict orders to tear anyone’s pant leg if someone comes to the front door asking if I am an active member on a certain coal forum.

Ok I apologize, back on topic here. We need to steer this gentleman toward some cheap, reliable, steady heat.

If the Geo system is only falling a little short, and it is economical to operate, it seems like direct vent NG unit would be the way to go for a boost on the cold days.
