Is there already a chimney in place? If there is, a used stoker seems like a good way to go as long as she can take care of it.

Trailer furnace would certainly heat the basement, but then you need to install a fuel tank. Depending on the local electric rate and insulation (or lack of) on the basement walls, a 4000W hanging heater might be the way to go.

Any time somebody talks about heating a basement I hope there is some amount of insulation. Otherwise can be a big btu hog for any fuel.

If you are talking about a freestanding stoker and not a furnace the 30" doorway would not be a problem. For reference, a Harman mag stoker is about 25" wide so it would fit.

The challenge with a freestanding stoker is getting the heat distributed from the basement to the upstairs. Supply and air returns need to be figured out, even with that there will still be cooler areas upstairs.

Getting the coal to the basement should be thought out so it is as easy as possible.

There are a couple Alaska Stokers for sale on the Harrisburg and Lancaster CL for less than $1k.
