so the burner on our alaska 140 has been off since we bought it 5 on the control box was equal to about 3 the knob doesn't zero all the way I am assuming it spun on the set screw
turn the knob to stop re-adjusted the set screw fixed that
but now on heat range 6 or higher the fire is running right off the end of the grate tons of unburnt coal in the pan
flame is kind of lazy but plenty hot
whats gone wrong
plugged combustion air holes ?, to much feed ? is there any adjustment ?
anybody ever meddled with a bigger external combustion blower ?
140 85k burner way out of wack

Assuming it was bought used, those symptoms sound like the air chamber under the grate may be clogged with fines. It's been a long time since I had a 140 but I believe if you remove the combustion blower there's an opening through which you can vac the air chamber.
My second guess would be that the grate isn't seated properly and is letting air escape without passing through the air holes. As Lightning points out, it also could be the air holes themselves, which can be cleared with an awl or a (1/8"?) drill.
Good luck.

I usually clean out the grate and the air chamber under the grate during cleanings. I run a 140 also and that has definitely been an issue for me. I actually just cleaned ours out a couple days ago.

If you ran your feed rate at 5 before, you would now have to run it on 3 to have the same amount of coal being feed to the grate.

So running your feed rate at 6 now would be comparable to running it at 8 before you reset you knob. Be it a coal trol or manual control running at 80% will most likely run your fire off your grate.

Also my Alaska plastic combustion wheels clog up over time and drastically reduce the airflow reaching the grate. I use compressed air to clean mine, but you can also remove them and clean them under hot water.
air holes are clean its been so cold haven't had a chance to shut down and pull the combustion motor and vac the inside of the grates
I have read posts about the numbers on the alaska heat control boxes meaning jack squat but it just seems like something is way way off
even on 4 I got enough black and shiney in the pan to be concerned
