It's not optimal, but this is better than no cold return to the stoker at all. Block the cold air return to the oil furnace at the green line so that air can't just go around in a circle thru your duct work, route your cold air return to the stoker indicated by the blue lines. You would need to unblock it to use the oil furnace so you'll need to come up with something that makes it easy to do so. Perhaps a piece of tin hanging on a hinge (inside the cold air duct at the green line) that could only open towards the oil furnace would make it automatic. Just my free thinking going on there lol.

Interesting idea. I could fabricate something like that without too much trouble.
I also thought about running the hot air out of the stoker parallel to the cold air duct, through the wall, and tapping into the hot air outlet on the furnace. I could then feed the hot air ducts and totally bypass the oil furnace.

Sounds like a very good plan .

Now your thinking!

Just make sure everything is properly sized, and very well insulated!

Moving the warm air supply to the other side of the oil furnace is a step in the right direction. You'll still need something to prevent air from looping thru the oil furnace. Although, the looping may not be quite as dramatic.
