I have a top vent keystoker in my basement. I pump the heat upstairs. I have a register on it to keep the cats from getting toys down there. I removed everything I can on the register to not slow the cfm flow down and still not good enough. I take it off and it blows 2x harder. Any suggestions?

That's not the choice I would of made for a vent-GOOGLE floor vents--this one has been in for over 25 yrs & has no blockage like yours does--simple answer--get a different or even a little bigger vent.

Get rid of the cats or install a larger register? You could always add a duct booster.

The other thing is, do you have another register cut in the floor somewhere or a louvered basement door? You need a means for the cold air to make it into the basement. If you only have 1 register, you are metaphorically pissing in the wind.

Keep in mind though that twice the volume of air flow does not equal twice the BTUs. With more volume air flow the air will be cooler. For example, if your furnace's delta T between cold air return and warm air supply is 70 degrees, doubling the volume flow would produce a change in temperature of 35 degrees.

The advantage of increased air flow is a hair more efficiency scrubbing heat off the furnace and those BTUs are dispersed more evenly if you are having problems with cold spots in the house.

Bigger is Better, in this case anyway. Free Flowing Air is always best.

I hesitate to recommend duct boosters anywhere within first ~10 feet of stove body...they will have even a shorter life than their normal short life...buy 2, you'll need a replacement sooner than you think.

I'm convinced I don't know much, BUT-I do know that with the larger, unobstructed floor vent, I got way more heat upstairs.

Just ordered 500 cfm upgrade. Fasco 50769-d500. Stock size on the 105 is 350 cfm. When at full burn.. the 350 cfm runs and runs and runs. I will do temperature testing at full burn to register and report back. I do have a cold air return at opposite end of the house and it works good. I like bigger register idea, just don't like the idea of cutting bigger hole in living room.

Why are you worried about the blower. Do you have duct work on the stove?

Can you post some pics of the heat runs? What size comes off the furnace?

Is there any possibility that the grate is doing its job as a "floor diffuser", and is creating a false impression of lower CFM by spreading the given airflow over a larger area relative to the focused column of air you get without it?

Updated - Installed the new bigger register and the air flow GREATLY increased. Someone asked size of pipe going into it. 6" I believe is coming off the stove to this register.

In my K 90 I cut an 8" hole and put a 485 cfm blower and it worked brilliantly. I also would enjoy seeing the duct work

I put an 8" on the top of my keystoker, and blocked off the top front vent so almost all goes thru the pipe to upstairs. mine just dumps into a floor grate where the old small floor furnace was.
