I have no history with this stove. Bought the stove used on CL this summer. Replaced hopper gaskets, grate gaskets and top door gasket this summer. Left side lit right up using store bought coal stove starters (paper bag with paper and charcoal in them). Tried several of the bag starters as well as using hot coal from the left side to get right side lit. It will not stay lit. Before lighting I made sure all the grates were clear and vacuumed out fines from underneath.
A couple things to note:
1. Its 48 degrees out. Draft is not great 0.01-0.02 on the meter
2. While using starter bag I saw smoke coming out of the clean out door. I'll be replacing that gasket on Thursday
3. Combustion fan covers are covering half of the input port. I tried using this full open on the right side with no difference. Getting plenty of air based on the sparks from the starter bags. Should I try closing it off more?
4. Currently have the barometric dampener blocked off to try to induce more draft.
5. Flames on the left side at 99 feed rate only about 4-6 inches high. I was thinking they should be higher. Maybe not?
Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Fifth time is a charm I suppose. Did the same thing five times but it looks like the right side is finally lit. What's weird is now the right side is making the left side look barley lit. Flames on left side still 4-6 inches high while flames on right side about 8-10 inches tall. Draft is significantly better now with second side lit (0.03-0.04).
I will still be shutting down on Thursday to replace ash pan door gasket regardless.

I would not find the different sides burning differently as being a concern. The air will naturally go as resistance takes it. More air=more burning. I see this all the time with my Hitzer 503 w/2 grated sides. Over time they equalize. Then its time to re-shake and watch it again ! LOLbrandonh98 wrote: ↑Mon. clogged holes in grate, difference in blower fans, dirty blades on the combustion fan, etc..how about the gaskets under the grates can have air leaks. all can lead to variances in the burn on the grate. I usually have a problem lighting the second burner on mine too, usually takes a couple tries. let it settle down for a few hours and see if it evens out.
more heat generates more draft.
if your at FR=99, you should have a full grate of burning coals with just a little ash at the end, if not, you MAX should go up a couple points.

All great suggestions but checked them all. Once I finally got it going and it settled out the two grates burned pretty even, not perfect but close. I'm going to light the right side first next time and see if that makes a difference. Maybe the second one is just harder to light for some reason. Idk..

shouldn't matter which one you light first, i have switches for each side to turn off when not in use one for stoker and one for combustion blower.
