Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Looking to buy one

Post by 2004blackwrx » Mon. Oct. 02, 2017 10:29 am

I HAVE THE KEYSTOKER KOKER DIRECT VENT. I Installed it 2 to 3 years ago and it has worked great. Based on what I read I used a stainless steel stove pipe. http://m.go2marine.com/controller?f=932 ... Stove+pipe
The link shows the pipe I used but after only a few seasons it looks like swiss cheese. I need recommendations for a quality pipe that will last or something dirt cheap i can easily replace each year. I prefer the quality long lasting option. I see some people use the duravent pellet pro vent but it doesnt appear to be rated for coal. Thanks

You need a very expensive stainless or take it apart and clean it when not in use. It will last forever as long as you're burning, when you shut it down, they start to rot.

316T stainless should meet code, but will still erode. It will hold up better and erode more slowly than any other stainless that meets code. It must state 316T, and not merely 316 or 316_ (where _ is anything other than T).

Olympia Chimney Supply out of Scranton makes a Class A pipe with a lifetime warranty. They sell all kinds of pipe, I'm not sure if they have a product that will meet your needs. Check out their website and see what you can find. I don't think that they sell direct to the public.

As was already said above,
By just disconnecting, removing and storing in a dryer location during the off season will save one all this aggravation.and expense.Pay now or pay later, the choice is yours.

My original exhaust pipe lasted 6 heating seasons (I would patch it up with silicone when I saw issues) ended up replacing the majority of it with sch. 10 stainless steel pipe, 304L I believe, I'm pretty sure it will outlast me.

I am torn between a direct vent or chimney vent Keystoker warm air furnace. Since the we will put the furnace in the storage room in the basement are away from chimney, I think the only option we have is the direct vent one. If venting through the chimney, we would need to run the pipe above the basement ceiling, and drill a hole through the brick wall of the chimney, which I am not sure if this can be done. The direct vent furnace is selling at $6,800 for a 120,000 BTU installed, the chimney vent is significant cheaper.

I am not sure what are the pros and cons of the 2 venting options. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Chimney, Chimney, Chimney!! :D

Look at any and all ways of possibly using a chimney for your install, either an existing chimney or new. I do not recommend a long run of pipe from the stoker to the chimney. You will need access to any horizontal runs to inspect/clean out the fly ash probably more than once per heating season.

The bitterness of a having a Direct Vent/Power Vent remains long after the sweet taste of low price is forgotten.

Why pay forever for electric blower 24/7, when hot air already rises forever for FREE.
Need I mention mechanical things running 24/7 in a hot dirty environment have a very short trouble free lifetime. 8-)

They are pretty noisy also if installed in a house..... mine is anyway. I am looking to install a chimney in the off season for all the above stated reasons.
