Reading Stoker Stoves... Worth?

Locally I see a place that has a few Reading stokers for sale. I;m not sure of the model...RS96C or RS-96 to look at the website. No dealers are open now so I thought maybe someone here would know what list price is. I think he's selling them cheap. They are brand new. He also has the steel black box ones... camp & cottage model? If anyone knows prices, I'd sure appreciate it! He bought out a dealer and is just selling them to get rid of them. Once they're gone, no more!

If the quality of their stoves is anything like the quality of their coal.............burn their brochures in a Harman stove for heat next winter!

The reading stoves use the "tri-burner" coal feed and grate system. These are OK but not great for efficiency. The older Alaska stoves use this same design so IMO the value of the stoves is the same as a refurbished Alaska stove with new paint, gaskets and glass. I sell my rebuilt Alaska stoves with upgrades to the triburner which includes separate combustion fan, rod end linkage and coal-trol for $1,500.

Just my $.02 but I would'nt pay much more than that for a brand new reading stove since they are using a design that needs a few "improvements" to work on par with today's stoves.

I attached a pic of the mods to give you a reference if you go to look at a stove. Happy hunting. :)

The RS-96S ( Alegehney) was going for about $1950 last fall which I believe is way out of line for an outdated design. An Alaska channing III was $100 less for the base model and a far better built stove as far as fit and finish are concerned. I wouldn't give more than $1500 for one of them because I believe it requires $400 worth of upgrade to put it on a level playing field with every other stove out there

You'd be nuts not to buy it for that price.

Hey! I'm only 5 years and 4 months late answering this......

This guy had a handful of them & I was told $800 or $1,000..... it tool me a few days to find the value.... in that same time HE discovered the value.... when I went back to buy one his price had doubled. They did sell though.... but not to me.

another Harman advocate clearly has some learning to do about the tack Harman Stoves chose to take...wake up and smell the coffee for god sakes! My opinion is to take their brochures and burn them in a Leisure Line or Keystoker :dancing:
It never ceases to amaze me the people a lil' money, fancy advertising and keeping your thumb down on "American people" can buy :(
