Never use a car or starting battery. Never buy a 12 volt battery. What makes a battery last in deep discharge situation is heavy internal lead grid or plates. All those electric golf carts are a testament to sever abuse...I recommend pairs of 6 volt golf cart batteries to get large 12 volt configurations for longest life and cheapest to own from day one to day none... ;)

I use (4) US125 6v deep cycle batteries in my setup wired 2s2p (2 series/2parallel). @ 242ah each at 6v, (4) yields 484ah @ 12v...I've tested them using the AK110 furnace for (3) hours and had plenty of life left.

It is ALWAYS BEST to go with lowest voltage battery and connect more of them them in series than to have higher voltage and need to parallel them in order to raise the amp hours needed....parallel is trouble if done more than once or twice as it becomes very difficult to keep all individual cells balanced and charged so then the bank will fail and replacements fail also...just don't do it...

Here's a good youtube video explaining how to wire a 2s2p configuration using (4) 6v deep cycle batteries. There are other battery voltages and configurations that are obviously better...... This video just shows the wiring concept using (4) 6v's...I have digital voltage readouts on both 12v series connected batteries. After 3 years the voltage hasn't varied .05v between the two banks...Seems to work pretty good.

Circuit wise that YouTube is Spot On...other than that is leaves a lot of important detail out.

Electricity will always chose the path of Least Resistance...do not help it to take shortcuts...
Every piece of copper wire MUST be matched the same exact length for the cell to cell jumpers...then the 2 longer copper wires likewise must be exactly matched lengths also.

Wire size can not be skimped on either...if your inverter says surge power is double or half again as much above steady rate you can forget it if the wire wasn't sized for that increase...may even kick the inverter off due to the overload...bigger is better.

Sloppy work will cause the troubles mentioned earlier above.

Best to suck it up and get a small generator. We did. Runs the stove and will run for days if needed.

So what do you do when you're not at home when the power goes out? The Battery Backup is designed to keep the furnace running during an outage when we are at work. For extended outages, a Generac 1700w pure sine wave gen keeps the furnace running for extended outages. It doesn't hurt to have both!

Having both, the generator can be shut off once battery has re-charged and all can be quiet again...with still heating. ;)
