How many 40# bags of coal did you use per day in your unit?

OK, I'll bite.

Why does it have to be 40 pound bags?

Because that's what most coal comes in when it's bagged. So far I've used one bag a day in my indoor boiler.

OK, I'm not sure that's true. Why don't you just ask how many pounds per day people are using, I can answer that one. About 35 pounds per day.

Don, it's true. That's all they sell around here, 40# bags or bulk. Not fun carrying a ton of bagged coal to the basement by yourself a bag at a time. Gotta come up with some kind of slide where I can slide the bags down the basement stairs. :D

BCDEX, welcome to the forum. It would help out greatly if you filled out your avatar. How many sq ft ya heating & with which boiler. I heated 1500 sq ft with boiler in basement and all DHW on 1.3 bags per day. & that is with a fire breathing belching Harman hand fed. & I don't think that is too bad.

Yep, that would sure explain a lot!!! From my research, blows the doors off my Harman. You are going to love the absolute silence of a hand fed boiler. Wife & I are recovering from the flu so past couple of nights I took the couch with our big dog. It was so silent it was deafening when I heard a click, AS I listened I could barely hear the circulator going. & That was the most noise I noticed since November. Congrats & welcome.

Both are very similar in design. However the DS doesn't require firebricks as the entire firepot is surrounded by water. That's a great innovation & most likely increases heat transfer. Your firepot is slightly larger & yours holds 2 gal more water. Not to mention that the Harman ash pan doesn't catch all the ash; as the shaker mechanism forces the pan 2 inches off to one side. All in all I think you have a real nice boiler there. Glad ya made the post, as not many about the DS boiler. However your post just confirmed my suspicions.

A fire pot not insulated from water backed walls is the worst possible design.

Why is that Franco? These walls are 1/4" thick. No need for firebrick.
