Stoker Coal Boiler: Harman ST8-BF8

Post by momto3rugrats » Mon. Sep. 14, 2015 6:24 am

I need some help.
My father has an old Harman ST8-BF8 Verti-Flow Coal Stoker (purchased in '89). He needs a replacement grate for the unit.
He called our local Harman dealer and, of course, the model is no longer made.
They recommended he purchase a new stove! Not in his budget at this time.
Any recommendations where I can get a replacement part?

Thanks!

Welcome.

Find out of the stoker uses a single piece grate, or a two piece grate. To my knowledge, the single piece grates are no longer available, but the two piece is available.

What is wrong with the current grate?

It is actually ST8 _VF8 model number. With a one piece grate as opposed to Magnum and now Super Magnum which use a split 2 piece grate.
Best bet is finding *new old stock* out there.

WAITE A MINIUTE: Some later model st8-vf8's had the split grates...if your Dad's is 2 piece split, then you're in luck. :) Revisit your dealer and tell him you want the split grate of a Magnum.

The current grate is one piece and is cracked.
I've been searching online for "old stock" but haven't had any success.

Depending on how large the crack is, it might run a long time as-is.

Might get list of Harman parts stocking dealers name and phone numbers and call around.
Online sources have been scoured for a long while already. :o

The next cheapest way is to find a decent "donor stove" and "transplant" a newer Verti-Flow w/ split grates into Dads stove...or just run the "donor stove" . Moving away from that ST8 VF8 will be an improvement actually. And lots of Magnums were made.

Mine was cracked when I bought the house 14 years ago and it's still going strong. I have no idea how long it was cracked prior to that.

Depends, as long as the crack is not high on the grate near where the coal is fed it should be ok, to high and risk of a hopper fire. I had one cracked low for 4 years and only just now changed it
