How do you reduce the fan noise with the Harman Magnum? It is on a brick hearth and a brick chimney. I was thinking about building a wall from the side back to the brick chimney and putting sound proofing foam in each wall and the floor and the back of the brick chimney. I am hoping that I could absorb some the the fan noise. The fan will get plenty of air from underneath. What do you all think?

Is it really that noisy?

I am having a Magnum Stoker installed on Tuesday and my heart sinks just a little to hear about a noisy fan. It's replacing a hand fed stove so the silence of it burning will be missed. I never saw the stove in operation and never gave a thought to a noisy fan.

is it the fan making the noise or is it the noise of the vibration between the fan mounts and the mounts on the stove?

It's a metal to metal contact. Sometimes if I cock the fan on a slight andle it will sit in the groove a little tighter and the vibration noise goes away.

Put a small strip of construction paper between the fan flange and the groove on the stove it fits in, takes some patience. I put a dab of crisco on the paper to help the fan slide in without tearing the paper.

Helps dampen the vibration.

How about putting stove caulk around the stove where the fan is?

build a little box with celotex foam or something around it to absorb the noise....

I noticed the same thing last week with our Harman and it was funny cause it wasn't a problem all season, it was that vibration thing and giving it a little pressure with my hand silenced it so Sunday I took it off it just slides out then went down the cellar fired up a little air compressor we have and BLEW it out real good Blower, Housing and Motor and cleaned the grooves it slides into got a good bit of dust out some of it heavier coal fine type like the kind that come out of the little clean out tray.
Seems to have done the trick so far .

Mine's the same, too. The fan itself runs quiet, but it's that little bit of play in the flange that the fan slides into where she hums. I took a small block of wood and cut it to fit snugly around the fan housing and press tight to the floor. That bit of pressure is all mine needs to keep quiet.

As already stated regular cleaning does wonders for fan balance and therefore quiet. Also if you just slightly bend one corner of the flange it has the same effect as the wood/construction paper/caulk by making the fan slide in snuggly with no extra materials needed. Of course the combustion and convection fans can both be treated in the same manner.

After operating 5 different Magnums for a total of a couple years I have not noticed any sustained fan noise that needed dampening aside form the cleaning and preventing rattling solutions.
