Not much to add to all the sound advice given, but I'll point out that the gaskets on the ash door and fire door are not critical for safety so much as efficiency. However, the gasket attached to the rear of the grate (where the grate is nearest the hopper) is important for both safety and efficiency.
Working CO alarms are a good friend when you might need them!

No different than opening the draft on a hand fired stove. You're just going to be sending a lot of heat out of the chimney.nwaelder wrote:Not much to add to all the sound advice given, but I'll point out that the gaskets on the ash door and fire door are not critical for safety so much as efficiency.
