Ducting

hello I have a hot air oil furn. I plan on cutting off. on top I have a square insulation box which has the black bag insulation ducts running out from it. can I use this with the hyfire 2 and if not what kind of ducting would I use . I'm going to be placing this in my basement and its an older home. Hoping I can still use the existing ducting somehow. if you have a brand and type of ducting I should look at that would also help. thank you for your help.

Hi welcome to the forum. I assume the "black bag" duct work you are referring to is insulated flexible warm air duct. What I did is I used tin duct work for a few feet to get away from the furnace, then attached it to the flex duct as you see in the picture. I used the tin since I wasn't comfortable with plastic duct that close to the furnace. Hope this helps..

does yours have a plastic liner inside with a spiral ring going thru it? I think its the same thing, thank you.

Yes.. its basically an insulated collapsable tube like you described. The spiral ring keeps the tube round.. I believe they are rated for up to 200 degrees. My warm air never goes over 150. It usually runs between 100-130 degrees.
You should be fine with the insulated duct work. I would use tin for a few feet just to keep plastic away from the furnace.

Just a note to check your local fire codes. Most (not all) localities or insurers use the National Fire Protection code (NPFA).
The NPFA requires automatic fire dampers on any ducts passing through floors and you may end up with no or voided fire insurance, not knowing it until after a house fire. See Topic
