Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Keystoker Koker Furnace
Coal Size/Type: Rice

Post by ricknellenw » Sun. Mar. 30, 2014 7:03 pm

Using our wonderful stoker furnace for our fourth season, we woke up this morning to no heat in the house. Went to the basement, furnace had almost a full pan of new coal in the bottom, pushed out off the plate but was no longer running. No burned ash coal, just new coal like we feed to the hopper. Last time I went to feed it was last evening, then all was well, so stumped on why it wasn't running or no fire?????

Hot Air Coal Stoker Stove: Keystoker Koker controlled with CoalTrol

If you had a good fire last night, then an out-fire, then found the stoker pushing coal this morning you either had a power outage last night which cut the power to the stove long enough for it to die or your high temperature limit tripped the stove off and you lost the fire. Once the stove cooled back off, it turned back on and started feeding coal as if nothing ever happened.

This happened twice last season to me just after I started it up in the fall. It would be burning in the evening (with warm days) then it would be cold and pushing unburnt coal the following morning. Finally figured out I had dirty filters that weren't letting the convection fan pull enough air through the filters to cool the stove enough once it would get cranking during the cold nights. Stove would over heat, high temp limit would shut the stove down and once the stove cooled and the stoker started back up, the fire was gone. Since then I ALWAYS put fresh filters in at the start of every season, so I don't make myself look like an idiot more than one year!!!

Rob has given you good advice.
My guess is the short term power outage.
Recycle the coal in the ash bucket and fire it up again to see how it goes.

Not so sure about power outage but checked all clocks and they were all on the money!
Any other thoughts? Thanks!

We lost power Sunday morning at 2:30 am. I stayed up as long as I could, but the power didn't come on soon enough. Luckily it wasn't too cold that night. This has only happened to me once in ten years. For others on this board, losing power is a monthly occurrence.

Hot Air Coal Stoker Furnace: Alaska Channing III

our power was out friday afternoon when we got home from work,
not sure why. but the stove was cold and the fire was out!

i used my last starting mouse when I checked my vent pipe
3 weeks ago, so I had to learn the old fashioned way to restart
the Channing. took me a couple tries, and too much time compared
to the mice! ended up making a dam, then using some small pieces of
wood, and a few chunks of lump charcoal, and that did the trick.
once that got going, spooned on some rice coal, a little at a time until
it was going good then removed my dam. reminded me of my
harman Mark III days!

my propane torch doesn't work properly, and I only get a flame
but no oomph with it, so it was a challenge.
