It does have an emergency heat setting which used to fire the oil burner. Now it controls the coal boiler. It's only 3 years old. If I had to guess, I'd say it's multi stage. How does that effect generator size?

If it turns out to be multistage compressor(s), there is usually a dip switch to lock it on 1st stage only...then you don't need to have full load generator capacity, but it will also operate HP at reduced output.

No heat strips. Only emergency heat now is the coal boiler. Oil furnace as back up to the boiler. Only plan to use heat pump for A/C.
