Lost Power Last Night but...

A Coal stoker furnace or stove controls most operations including automatically feeding the coal. They are quite similar to any conventional oil and gas units and easily operated for extended periods of time. They commonly use rice coal but may use larger sizes like buckwheat. They can be used as primary heat, supplementary heat or have a dual set up with your existing oil/gas furnace.

It does have an emergency heat setting which used to fire the oil burner. Now it controls the coal boiler. It's only 3 years old. If I had to guess, I'd say it's multi stage. How does that effect generator size?

If it turns out to be multistage compressor(s), there is usually a dip switch to lock it on 1st stage only...then you don't need to have full load generator capacity, but it will also operate HP at reduced output.

don't let emergency heat run off generator...mega big load.

No heat strips. Only emergency heat now is the coal boiler. Oil furnace as back up to the boiler. Only plan to use heat pump for A/C.
