I got a call to clean a stoker.....when I went into the basement I noticed a half melted efm 520 pot laying in the corner. I said what the heck happened to that!!! Its a apartment building and the one tenants was in charge of taking care of the stoker. As you can see by the pic he never took care of it till it completely filled up and melted. Is that covered under his security deposit????? Just thought you guys would enjoy this pic

I would bet that one or more of the grates were broken first and the fire started burning in the air chamber first. On top of that the landlord put a very irresponsible tenant in charge of changing the ash can. The landlord said the entire boiler was filled with ashes.

This is a good example of "the operator needs to be smarter than the equipment".

So there now would be one less Axeman?

Aren't you the guy who wanted people to think of EFM's and AA's as being "as good as" each other?

Mike

Brilliant!

I have nightmares about forgetting about ashes and going down to see that,
and that is exactly how I would think that it would look like.

To have a tenant take care of ashes, make em sign a form that says $50 less month rent each month
that it is emptied.
And all costs to fix/repair/replace if they forget.

Maybe an alarm clock could help in this situation?

Time to make the donuts...errr change the ash bin. haha

Yea, I am that guy that said that. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Looks like I'll have to go back and redact that comment considering the damage done to that EFM.

The Axeman ash tray would not have done that. Well Mike, looks like the Axeman has one up on your beloved EFM.The Axeman would still likely be there. Looks like one less EFM for sure though. Must be killing you inside!!! :D

This is an obvious case of sabotage by Matt and Dave at Leisure Line. I never thought they would stoop this low and offer the tenant a free t-shirt that reads "Wanna see my Stoker" in exchange for not emptying the ash bucket. I guess they'll do anything to sell a boiler nowadays! ;)

good thought...but it would not hold up and even if it did the tenant has nothing to get... old saying "cant get blood from a stone"
A judge would view this as owner knowingly asking an incompetent person care & maintain something they don't know.

Here we go again.

I have not personally seen an Axeman that was run with the ash tray disabled or totally plugged with ash, but I expect the fire would eventually get up into the transfer head and probably not do the brass parts and wick oiler any favors. AHS units are a different story, with the ash try disabled the fire eventually gets to the hopper  ...hence the additional safety controls on the new units.

If the person in charge of the boiler doesn't know what they are doing, eventually it is going to have some sort of failure. I make an effort to take excellent care of my machinery, so up until now I have never really thought about which unit can take the most abuse.

As for Mike mourning over one less EFM, it is only one less burn pot. A service guy like Matt probably has a rebuilt pot or complete stoker right on the truck.

When my brother and nephew moved into their rented place it had an EFM 520 DF in the basement.

I went to see it and the ashes completely covered the pot and pan. The previous tenant had used the oil gun and left it full of ash. Eventually the owner hired a real EFM coal gut to make the necessary repairs which includes replacing the clean out lever as that was frozen and broken in place.

Do you really think an AA would burn up the feed tube ?????

I would think it would get starved for air and die a slow death. But I ain't gonna do an experiment on mine.

Rick
