Don't sweat it, Matt! I wouldn't have done it any other way! I'm a picky SOB, so I can then pick my own way of doing things I just smile every time I go downstairs to the basement and it's humming away keeping it nice and toasty!

link to the stove or is it over? might be looking for a third stoker at the right priceMatthaus wrote:It's part of my program of "No Stove left Behind". I am a hopeless junk collector, I see the possibilities where others see folly and too much work. The good thing is I have infected a few of you along the way. The Channing II I am selling on ebay right now was way worse than either of the ones I foisted on my fellow forum members. The Harman Magnum I sold recently was left outside in the weather for 6 months and ended up looking brand new!
Hooray for the resurrection of the derelict and despondent hunks of iron that used to burn coal with pride and service to humanity! Chris is the inspiration to start a whole new movement.
Just call me the Sanford and Sons wanna be from now on.

I finally managed to get some work done on the Alaska. Hopefully, I'll continue tomorrow.

Wow, does that bring back memories! Take your time and do it right the first time, and you'll be more than proud of it when it's done.
If you need any tips or hints, feel free to PM me.

Hopefully sooner then later...I still have more clean-up to do on it. I had my exhaust fan in the cellar window and went through quite a few dust masks and I emerged late in the afternoon covered in rust. I have to give my wife credit, though. It didn't seem to faze her at all. I guess she's just used to seeing me like that.Matthaus wrote:Lookin good, you'll be ready for filling the basement with new paint smoke in no time!

As far as the new paint smoke, I've done that quite a few times. The Kent wood stove that the Harman replaced used to get a paint job every 2 years or so. It was a lot lighter then the Harman and I would just wheel it out on the hand truck to clean and paint it.
The Fisher in the fire place is past due for paint, that will be done in place with a brush. The Alaska will be easy, in the cellar, fan in the window, done!

Ah, the pleasant smell of solvents from drying paint is wafting up from the cellar. I made sure to shut off the water heater before I sprayed the stove, don't want any explosions. I'll spray all the rest of the parts outside. Progress is being made, slowly.

I've used up 4 rattle cans so far, in the stove body itself. Several coats on the outside, enough inside to cover. The Kast Console is very large inside, I removed as mush of the rust as possible without going crazy. If I was set up better here I would have used my spray gun, a lot faster and easier. I stayed with stove black, I am going to paint the doors a different color.lincolnmania wrote:i used 8 cans of ford blue engine paint on the sheetmetal of my efm , and 6 cans of hi temp black stove paint on the hot parts.......stank up the garage for 2 days.....still looks purdy tho

Took 4 cans on my Keystoker exterior (except the back) of Charcoal color, plus a can or two of plain black for the inside, the DV assembly, and the rear of the stove. It's holding up well.
Amazingly, it really didn't stink too badly. The exterior of my stove doesn't get hot enough anywhere to really cure the paint due to the double wall construction everywhere.
