Its not OK for coal to be pushing around the outsides of ash leaving you a dead spot of hard goo in the middle, I think most people would tell you to clean and check that the air holes are not clogged in the center of the grate which may cause improper burning of the coal making it fuse together in a clump. but hang in their because plenty of people here have experience with this unit and they will comment soon enough ;)

Are you referring to big ash chunks at the end of the grate ??

Sounds like klinkers to me. Are you burning harder than normal ??

Did you switch brands of coal ??

Are you blowing more air up through the grate ??

Try increasing the amount of feed or decreasing the amount of air. Klinkers form when coal burns really hot and fuses together. It is also possible that the end of the grate has become rough and not allowing the normal flow of ash to take place. IOf you can, shut it down and do a thorough cleaning. Make sure the air holes are all opened up. Run a couple passes of 80 grit sand paper across the end of the grate. Refire it and see if there is any change and report back to us.
