I've got Hitzer furnace, has anybody heard of anyone connecting one of these to their return air and getting the heat up into the living space?

you may want to look closely at your owner's manual. My Harman stove manual specifically prohibits use of a stove-pipe based heat exch. such as vogelzang or magic heat.

I have owned a number of them over 35 years of burning wood stoves and oil furnaces, never on a coal stove. I had a lot of problems with the magic on wood with cresote buildup and chimney fires but never had problems on oil and currently have one on the furnace. I would assume the same on coal. I wouldn't put the unit in a horizontal pipe section because of flyash. The perfect setup would be over a tee so the ash could be dumped during the heating season with out disconnection the stove pipe.
I suspect that Harman's restrictions are for product liability because if the magic isn't maintained there is the potential of plugging the flue and causing products of combustion to enter the house

I had a Vogelzang on my Alaska Channing and it did very little, was more trouble and expence than it was worth. It finally croaked and I can tell little difference in the room or stack temp.
If you do decide to get one, get the Magic heat brand, do not buy the Vogelzang, it's junk.

On A Hand Fed stove Yes On a Stoker stove No because a stoker stove really don't send enough heat up the stack Pipe
to make it worth Reclaiming most of the time the Magic heat reclaimer will not come on On a hand fed stove you will
get alot more heat going up the stack so it will Reclaim more heat back into the house

I'd agree Devil, there is also the cost in electricity to run it. Probably great for a wood stove because of the high stack temps but otherwise.
That thing may actually be dangerous on a really efficient stoker.
