This thing is driving me NUTS. 2nd year operator and can't get it to cool down enough. Seems if I close the ash pan dial down, fire goes out, open it too much, it's 80 degrees in here and fan blows constantly.

How about the dials on the loading door????

Anybody have one that can offer me a good starting point on how much draft on bottom and how much to spin the dials open?

I'm going CRAZY

Dials on the loading door should be nearly closed.

That's a big unit. How big of house are you trying to heat.If it's a smaller home or really well insulated you may need a firebox reducer,to calm down the heat output while keeping a hot fire going. Is this a new furnace and are all the gaskets tight.

Sounds like a draft issue to me.. Do you have a barometric damper and a manometer installed?
I had the same problem with my furnace yo yo-ing like that until I installed a baro damper.. :D
