Direct Vent Coal Stoves [No Chimney]

A Coal stoker furnace or stove controls most operations including automatically feeding the coal. They are quite similar to any conventional oil and gas units and easily operated for extended periods of time. They commonly use rice coal but may use larger sizes like buckwheat. They can be used as primary heat, supplementary heat or have a dual set up with your existing oil/gas furnace.

Look at Alaska, Leisure Line and Keystoker. They offer direct vent kits on certain models.

I think Harmen has direct vents too. Most Stoker stoves can be direct or power vented.

Lots of stove companies make such a stove. They are stokers and require electrical hook up. Do an internet search for stoker coal stoves or coal stoves, direct vent. Take care, Lisa

Coal burners, like fine wines, come in many different flavors and four out of my six coal fires are power vented and one is DV. However, is that already your chosen way or are you up still in the air. If you are undecided ask a different question. Answers are easy it's the questions that are hard.

Harman's DVC500 stove. Direct Vent, takes combustion air from outside. No chimney required, just a small pipe outside thru the wall.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

If I purchase a used Stoker, say an Alaska or Keystoker, can ANY model be converted to direct vent? Are the motors specific by brand, or is there a standard motor that can be added to any? Just looking for a small stoker next year for the other end of our basement, where there is no chimney. Do the major stove makers sell these separately? I have e-mailed Keystoker to see what they say.

Most models can be converted to a Power Vent (pulling the exhaust from the stove), mounts on outside of house.

Yes, you can buy the power vents separately ex)FIELD CONTROLS SWG POWER VENT

Direct Vents are more common on the Keystokers, mounts directly to the appliance and pushes the exhaust fumes out and the pipe has to be sealed properly.

If you do a search on Power Vent vs. Direct Vent, you see there is a slight difference, but basically function the same.

Thanks, WNY. I currently have a DV Keystoker, and was looking for a smaller stove for another application, and wondered if the ones I find on Craigslist can have the DV added.

The Harman DVC 500 is a good candidate for this. "DVC" in this case stands for Direct Vent Coal. They were discontinued by HHT, but there is some consideration being given to bringing them back as a Legacy Stoves product line. While our dealers are key to us measuring demand, and finalizing a decision, input from the forum would be considered as well.

How do you measure demand for a product that is not in production? Direct Vent units are less costly, less maintenance, and IMHO last longer than power vents.
