Hi guys. My dad just fired up a used hyfire II with coaltrol in his place. It is only a couple of years old and was used last winter. He says it is not putting out any heat , he started both burners and in the last 5 hours raised the temp in his 1500sq ft house 3 degrees. Both of us together have 0 coal burning exp. He says combustion blowers and feeders operate. Any help or sugestions on where to start or what to look for? Thanks

I don't have a Hyfire II but I would say you are not burning very much coal if the temperature only went up 3 degrees. Try increasing the feed rate. Most of your heat is probably going up the flue. By the way, I am heating close to 3800 sqft with a unit with a similar heat output. My unit raises the temperature 3 degrees in about 2 hours at a low rate of fire. Coal heat is slow to build but once it does it pours it on!

Just got back from looking at stove. Still not much heat . Coaltrol is set at 10 min 40 max, hold at 70 deg, comb fans run continuous, feed mech runs every 2 minutes.2" strip of coal burning with 6" blue flames. The plenum above stove with convection fan running is cool to the touch, front of stove will sizzle spit off finger tip (I know real scientific eh). Chimney pipe behind stove is warm but I can hold my hand on it. Possibly too much draft ?

at a max setting of 40 you should see 5" coal ban almost falling of the end of the plate and 15 to 20 inch of flame. run the start feed, hold the setup
unti it reads 10 and let it go see what happens.
i heat 2800 sqft with a pioneer.

No it is not a direct vent it goes into a 20' stainless chimney. We replaced a wood furnace with the coal stove. wood furnace always had an excellent draft.coal trol thermastat says feed rate is 99%.

Barometric damper ?
All the heat is up the middle of the chimney.

Where is the thermostat located? Are you at the set point? If you only have a small band of fire either your settings are off or you are on idle (setpoint reached)
I fired up my Hyfire this morning for the first time and raised the temps in the room above the stove 3 degrees in an hour. (1 burner)
I ran only 1 burner on my Hyfire II most of last winter and it kept my first floor of my 3200 sqft house toasty.

How close is your set temp to your room temp? You may have to raise it up 5+ degrees to get it cranking for a while. If it's close, it may start backing down as not to overshoot the temps. It the way the coaltrol works to maintain temps. Coal take time to heat up, it is NOT instant like gas or oil. SO, it may take a while to really get cranking. Normally an hour or so.
My hyfire, I run 46 Max, but your 6 and 40 is a great start to get it going.
Where is the stove located? (basement, living area, etc..) Where is the Thermostat located? etc...
Get a stove (Magnetic) thermometer, and check the stove front, pipe, before and after the baro, etc...and a manometer to check your draft accurately. On your baro, where is the weight set?

I run a Pocono, it has the same burner as the Hyfire.
My max is set to 60, I have had it as high as 66. There is no right or wrong for setting the min and max, there are to many viriables. You set them so the fire doesn't go out on min, and finishes the burn when it reaches the max.
When the stove reports a FR of 99%, turn up the max until the fire doesn't quite fall into the ash hopper.

Try Ebay. The Dwyer Mark II is a good one and is considered fit for the job by the tech I talked to at Alaska. You can get it for 25 bucks or less.ncountry wrote:Any good sources for inexpensive manometers?

my hyfireII is set at a min of 6 and a max of 36 right now. my CFT is at 18 to get it nice and hot before the fans kick on. sounds to me that you need to set that baro to keep that heat in the stove. ther is a manometer loaner program on this site. my stove is in the basement with custom ducting to all rooms on my first floor and it stays a nice and toasty 70 deg all day. stove is at idle alot of the time. just one side burning too.

the min and max settings equall the amount of seconds in a 100 second block of time that the feeders will run. 40 = 40 sec on 60 sec off.

The manomometer that Gambler gave a link to is not the correct one foe coal. That one is a #27, for coal it needs to be the #25. The 27 just doesn't give a fine enough reading.
