That's been discussed before lincolnmania, I'm no rocket scientist where this is concerned but its not the coal that burns but the gas that it produces in the surrounding rock. Coal gives off methane and I 'd imagine other flammable gases. This gas is what is burning through the porous rock that surrounds the coal. I'd imagine there is not enough oxygen for the coal itself to ignite.

Well here in good ole Schuylkill we have a total of three fires -

1. Centralia - the most famous

the other two are a lot smaller and people are just drilling to find out the scope of how big the fires are

2. East Norweign Township by St. Clair

3. Palo Alto

Number two made Newswatch 16 the other day and the 3rd made today's paper. When are people going to learn that dumping trash into a hole might lead to a vein of coal catching on fire. Hmm, they should of have learned something from Centralia.
