guys,

wondering if anyone has a coal scuttle like the one attached. I want to get a black one that will hold one bag of coal (40lb). This one is 16" high but when I compare what I have already i.e. a smaller bucket, I am not sure if this will hold a full bag either. If anyone has this in black/galvanized and happens to know capacity please advise. I like the shape of this one and prefer to the more open style buckets. This one is $44 in black or $28 in galvanized. I found a larger one but that was more expensive.

thanks in advance

I made this using a 5 gal plastic bucket. I used a piece of formica I had to make the scoop. Works great.

I use a 2-foot piece of 6-inch black stove pipe, cap on one end, handle screwed on the side. Holds exactly 20 pounds of coal, fits through my loading door better than the bucket-style scuttles, and because it is metal I don't have to worry about putting the end right into the stove.

So from the above measurements, applying rusty high-school mathematics, 3/8 cubic foot equals 20 pounds of coal. I don't know the diameter of your 16 inch scuttle, but I'm pretty sure it won't hold 40 pounds. My guess is it will hold 15 pounds.

1 gallon of container = 8 lbs coal roughly
5 gallon pail holds 40 lb bag of coal.
