Another tragic reminder. Be sure to have working smoke/CO detectors.
Also, there appears to have been only one exit from the basement.

Yes, it's a shame, they are not that expensive and I think some Fire Dept's will give them out for free if you can't afford one....

So sad. It mentions the landlord went over evacuation plans....yet had no smoke detectors? Here in Maine a land lord can go up for manslaughter if one of his units has a death from no working smoke detectors. Not only is the landlord required to supply them, it's their responsibility to make sure they work. (although it's not usually enforced to that extent)
