Is it necessary to have this on top of the unit? doesn't it block the fan vents?

Which plate and where does it mount? It depends, maybe to deflect the air out into the room or if you have a hole in the top to deflect it out the top?

It sits right on the top but covers the vents, I left it off, I assume it's for decorative puproses.

To my understanding the top plate on the Channing is for the air to go past more of the steel allowing for it to heat up more, thus raising your heat efficiency. It is removable so that you can clean in there or change to the Kast tope if you want to.

It makes it so the heat is washed off the top of the stove(the hottest part of the stove).

I put the plate on last night and the house was 5 degrees cooler than without it, I am leaving it off, it also moves way more air with the plate off.
