Where does one go to buy a coal mouse? I have done internet searches, but to no avail.

Thanks,

Your local coal dealer or stove dealer.. You more then likely won't be able to buy them over the net cuase there a safety hazard.

To tell you the truth I'm still in search of this eleusive mouse myself. Never saw one in the 15 years I've been doing this, not even in a customers house. I first heard of it here. I'm sure if I asked my uncle about it he would know exactly what you were talking about. Always used wood and always will but I wouldn't mind seeing what the hoopla is about.

My dealer gave me two of them when I picked up my stove last fall. When I tried them they went out before they ignited the coal.

I use a small wood fire with some matchlight charcoal underneath. It works good foe me.

I'm pretty sure the items I saw at The Tractor Supply Co. store were coal mice.

I did some websearching and came up with nothing, so far.

I did find a pretty good writeup about lighting and maintaining a coal fire here:

http://hearth.com/what/coaltips.html

It even has a link back to this forum!

Yes, I know. Technically it goes to my coladelivery.com website. We exchanged links a few years ago.

I use wood pellets to get the coal burning.
You could take a 16 oz soda cup full of pellets or wood chips and pour melted wax over the wood just enough to coat the pellets or wood chips.
A cheap votive candle would work as well.

Me I just use my torch to light the pellets and they in turn light the coal.

Thanks, everyone. Alaska did have them, and they work great.

Someone from Phillipsburg Pa is selling something similar to a coal mouse on Ebay. It's called a Jesse stoker starter. Do a search for coal stoves on ebay and you'll see them.
