Noticed a big difference this year in the amount of ash that we get from a given volume of coal. Are there different grades of anthracite? Any tests that can be done (moisture content?) to determinen "good" and "bad" coal? We get so much ash from the "bad" coal that I'd seriously consider switching over to wood pellets next year. I have to empty my small ash pan almost once a day when the temp drops towards zero. Thanks for any help....

Yes, it has to meet a certain specification to be labled anthracite. Where I purchase it from they test it on site daily (i think, might be every two days) and have it independently tested as well. Not exactly sure of the time frames and requirements for testing.

Best thing to do is find a reputable dealer and stick with them. I frequently lose potential new customers because of pricing, just because you're getting a better price doesn't mean you're getting a better deal.

My bags are labeled "anthracite", but there is a definate difference from lot to lot.

I'd be willing to drive down to PA to get some good coal. What's the going rate per 100lb bag for good quality anthracite, and what's the closest place between Scranton and Binghamton?

If you're going to be coming this way just get it in bulk, even if you have to go purchase some plastic garbage cans. A lot of people out of the area will just get a old trailer and leave it on the trailer once they get it home.

I believe the stuff here at our supplier in WNY is from the Reading Mines in PA. I noticed a difference also, the first ton was much higher ash content, having to empty ashes almost eveyday. Also, sometimes the ash comes out more brown than grey. Other times, really white/grey.

The next 2 batches about a month later, burns almost to nothing, only having to empty every 3-4 days, that is only 1/2-3/4 full on the ash bin.

Our supplier bags his own from bulk in Tyvek bags. You can get the 40 or 50# bags or bulk. Pick up or delivered.
