New Distribution Vent
I just finished adding a new powered vent to move the warm air that gets trapped above my computer area (basement) to the upstairs dining room floor vent. (My computer is at the end of the hall downstairs & is always a very warm area as the heat seems to get trapped there. The vent I installed should draw some warm/hot air from near the ceiling & blow it up into the dining room/living room, which is the farthest point in the house from the TLC)

It looks like a nice installation. Now, proceed with your thoughts of how to get cool air returned to the computer room. Before the heated air leaves, cooler air must have an available path to replace it. You may want to try your system first.
The king of air distribution.I have to get some of thoes wall grates.I have to keep pulling out cat toys with mine.Big old floor grates from gravity system.Cleaned mine out last Sunday,7 mouse toys,2 pens,1 pencil and assorted candy wrappers.

Exactly !! You can't 'inflate' that room, you have to let cool air out to allow hot air in.Dallas wrote:It looks like a nice installation. I think this might work: The boot I used only takes up 1/2 of the floor vent so I'm hoping the cold air will just drop by itself through the back 1/2 of the vent to the basement below. (if not I can always put a power vent going down to draw the cold air)Dallas wrote:t looks like a nice installation. It's hard to tell from these pics but the dining room/living room are open to the stairway leading down to the basement. (split entry ranch) Any warm air being forced upstairs will force cold air down the stairway.

What's to stop the hot air from making a quick 'U turn' and going back down the 'cold air gap' to to inlet of the duct..?? Your cold air return should be on the other side of the room..
I guess since you have the open stairway, this will help.. have you sat on the stairs when the stove is heating the house? Can you feel the cold air rushing down the steps?

If you look at the floor vent grille itself, the forward part (where the air is being fan forced up from the basement) has louvers deflecting the air forward into the room. The back 1/2 of the grill has louvers angled towards the back of the house.LsFarm wrote:What's to stop the hot air from making a quick 'U turn' and going back down the 'cold air gap' to to inlet of the duct..??
Most of the time I wont have the vent powered & I'm hoping the warm air will rise & the cold air will drop by itself. When it gets really cold, I kick on the blower fan.
If you stand on the landing (base of the steps at the front door) you can feel it quite a bit cooler on your feet. Also, when the front door is opened, all the cold air falls down the stairs to the basement where the TLC is.LsFarm wrote:I guess since you have the open stairway, this will help.. have you sat on the stairs when the stove is heating the house? Seems to work pretty well but I'm always tinkering!
Here's a closeup of the floor grill Greg. The left side louvers are over the duct boot & deflect the forced warm air forward towards the living room. The right side louvers face the back of the house & there's not duct boot under that section.
I'll have to wait for the cold temps to really hit b4 I can see if I need to draw the cold air down with a fan.

Nice job. It will work fine. With that open stairway, the home will stay balanced as your new vent pushes air up. It also won't be a problem as long as that kitchen window is open.
Thanks Terry. It was mid 60's today but the kitchen window is normaly closed.coalkirk wrote:Nice job. It will work fine. With that open stairway, the home will stay balanced as your new vent pushes air up. It also won't be a problem as long as that kitchen window is open.
I have the TLC just barely simmering but tonight is going down in the low 40's & tomorrow will be a cold, rainy day. Just finished insulating the new ducts. (the room they're in doesn't get real cold but it's about 10-15* cooler than the downstairs hall)
