Price is what killed this plant with only 22% utilization in 2022, and <50% since 2015...

6 and 7 cent electricity is not competitive....renewables at 2 to 5 cents took over...

Sad day we live in choosing to loose reliability in our power grid. Shame that maintenance squandered at this plant and now the cost to become profitable is too high with needed repairs. Renewables didn’t do this. Poor leadership decisions did.

I dont see renewable generation rates anywhere near 2 to 5c on PA power choice. all 10.5 to 15C So what s the plan for a summer heat wave and a winter cold snap? Rolling blackouts?

It seems most people on this forum are using coal for home heating and that's a mutual interest/practice that brings them here. Obviously the forum is public for anyone to join, and all are welcome. Am I right in saying you do not burn coal for home heating and are a proponent of it being put to rest? If so, are you just here to instigate division?

Iv got coal in my blood. I still heat with it. I have my mining papers from working in a deepmine years ago. And am part owner in a coal company. Too bad Coalpail does not give out merit badges for those who check all the boxes.

Standby plants dont need to be going 24/7. A good friend of mine works at a coal fired plant that only fires up as needed ,and every cold snap and every heat wave he is on overtime. Peak demand is also where the very high spot prices and the big profits for the generating company are.

The only place coal use is decreasing is in the US.
The reason here is misguided rules and regulations put forth by unelected bureaucratic parasites.

I used to burn coal for over 50 years but cannot do it anymore...

Now I use electric to heat and power our 3 cars... Mostly off peak rates...

Long term PPA agreements have lower cost... Spot price will be higher...

A large part of the cost of energy is distribution which has been rising faster....

There were solar PPA 's at $0.02 KWHr signed in the western US...For 20-30 years....

My Total costs are Peak=$0.12751174/KWHr and OFF Peak=$0.04230133/KWHr.....

Regular rates are Delivery =$0.07123174 KWHr and $0.03494 KWHr Total = $ 0.10617174

I pay a premium for Peak power on the OFF PEAK plan...

Add taxes and fees by each state...
