Periodically, I get a load of coal that "bridges"; won't drop off the end of the slide, ashes keep building, unburned coal goes over the sides, and eventually fire goes out.

Is there anything I can do about this (other than not using the coal)?

Thanks.

It sounds like you have a stoker? My stoker will have the coal ash "bridge" as you describe but as long as there is room in the ash pan below, it will drop off eventualy. If the "bridge"goes out and touches the accumulated ash, it will fall and then unburnt coal will build up and fall off of the sides of the grate. Makes sure your ash is not accumulating and keeping the bridge from falling off.

Hi Annie,
I think I would turn your feed rate down. A little less coal might make a big difference.
