Closing of the Alfred Brown 7 Foot Slope, one of the last remaining underground anthracite coal mines in Pennsylvania.
I found a link from their Facebook page to this recent YouTube video done by the Underground Miners. I believe this mine was near New Philadelphia, Schuylkill County.

For quite a few years now Anthracite has been predominantly surface mined. Safety regulations among other things have put an end to underground Anthracite mining except for the small independents that are grandfathered in. Once they stop mining no one else can take the operation over.

It would be interesting to know how many independent deep Anthracite mines are left in Pa. There are some but it can't be very many. The one featured in that video was shutting down due to that vein squeezing out. I think they mentioned another veins shaft above the one featured. It's my understanding that Anthracite veins undulate a lot and even foldback sometimes. Not easy flat mining with continuous miners like the old Western Pa and WV shaft Bit mines.

I did read sometime back that a lot of the Anthracite surface mining in recent decades has been going back through the areas of the old shaft mines. Much of the bulk coal I have bought in the last 10 or 15 years has had some wood in it from the old shaft timbers. You didn't see that decades ago.

H, my understanding is that when veins are played out & are opened up again we WILL get some wood--I know I do. I'm bettin a lot of independents don't want to be publicized with all the newish govt. bullshit control. Just an old farmers understanding!! :) PS--thanx for the videos.

In case anyone is interested, here's a Facebook (yeah, I know) link to another video from this group. It shows working the coal carts at the Alfred Brown mine before closing. You need a FB login to see it.

Thanks for sharing this glimpse into the history of the Alfred Brown mine! It's fascinating to see the coal carts in action before the closure. Although I don't have a Facebook login, I appreciate the effort in sharing this unique perspective. magic 8 ball

In todays economy I wonder who would work in a mine today? My hats off to those who did but it reminds me of a million ways to die. I doubt even illegals would take the job.
