Hey Scott. What are we lookin at? (sideways) That doesn't look like Stewey. looks more like an insert.
Whatever it is, it sure is gorgeous.

"Where you goin with that gun in your hand?" LOL.
Beautiful Scott. Bet the Mrs. loves it. But you'll be missing Stew with them long burn times.
Always a trade off. Now you have something to view the dancing ladies, but need more tending. i think it's worth the trade. ;)
P.S. How 'bout the heat out-put. Does the insert provide much?

Getting ready for a reload, I still had a few little blues sticking around after a 12 hour burn. A thought popped into my head. How hot is it. Not thinking I grabbed my cheap China temp gun and pulled the trigger. At 1546° it screamed at me, blinked and shut off. I thought it was dead Jim. Another pull and to my surprise I saw two bright red dots. They had not worked in over 2 years and that overload shock must have somehow acted as a defibrillator bringing them back to life. I'm a happy camper now.

That is definitely a hot coal bed. I also wondered what temp it would be in that state, but my IR gun maxes out at 700-800°. Nice photo. (P.S. And it's not sideways) I see one lone dancer in the back. :)

I'm still wondering because my max is supposed to be 1000° :shifty:

Willie you talking about Pauliewogs heater?

There concrete below and cinder block behind.

Only exhaust temp in the back of a BB.
Front and sides blast the heat.
Yes.

I forgot about the concrete floors, but looks like wood over top of it to me.

You all with anthracite have the blues ,but my boiler with bituminous coal can

also have the blues...

This is true bottom combustion design where the coal is pyrolyzed and the resulting

gases are burned at a very high temperature. The high temperature also eliminates

the smoke because nearly all the carbon is consumed. The process is very similar to

the gasification boilers that burn wood , and this boiler can also burn wood and get

the same type of burn .

I am going to sell the boiler at the end of the heating season because I can longer do

the chores associated with it.

Hi Barney,
Do you have a thread here about that unit perhaps with pics and operating info
Not being a boiler guy it seems pretty advanced to me so of course interesting
Thanks

KingCoal:

Go to youtube they have many video's on wood gasification boilers and a few coal

units too.

I believe that my boiler gets 90-95% efficiency on bituminous coal and maybe 80-85%

with wood. Wood has more water and that lowers the efficiency at least 15-20%.

These video's I posted are with a 30' -7" chimney and 100% natural draft and no electric

used. I can heat a 5000 Sq Ft house with less than 60# of coal a day and 2 fills per 24 hours

except in real cold single digit temperatures you may need a 3rd tending due to ash

causing low air flow through the grate. I run this boiler 24/7/365 for heat and DHW year

round , can go 2 days in summer without filling but still usually need to ash once a day.

These boilers are mostly used in Europe and many are produced there. The costs now

are very high especially the shipping and handling.

I will try to post more info to specific questions.

Neighbor has a wood gas boiler. Uses about four acres of trees every winter. He stopped and asked me what I was burning since my wood pile never gets smaller. LOL!

Maybe his boiler is different than yours, but I frequent other “burning” forums and the consistent seems to be the same; they burn lots of wood.

Somehow seems yours is different and that could be, so I make no comparison.

I thought your post was interesting as well.
Is your unit something new? Seems like their would be more buzz with efficiency like that. Everyone I’ve seen locally and the many posts I see on other “burning” forums is that most wood boilers eat acres of trees. Which matches what I see of my neighbor down the road...every weekend replenishing his stash of wood.

Did you help him see the light of truth with your coal stove? Or let me guess, the wood is "free" and the blood, sweat and tears don't count
