Does anyone have advice for coal residue on a fieldstone foundation?

The coal bin has not been used since the early 1950s, so I recently removed the two wooden sides. A corner of the foundation makes up the other two sides.

The stones and mortar have a coating of paint(?) that is peeling. Beneath the paint there is coal residue. Any suggestions for the best or easiest way to take care of this? Is it wise to try to remove it, or better to seal it all under fresh paint?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Chris N.

Pressure washer. You will have to prep the area to contain the mess.

If you're really motivated--I'd skim it with mortar & then do whatever ya want--minimal muss, little fuss. :)

The best way to fix that is install coal stove, build a new bin and fill it with coal. No one will ever see it.

Coal dust can be ultra fine. When I was delivering coal if you had real wet coal your gloves would inevitably get wet, it would be embedded in your prints at the end of the day. Simply washing your hands wasn't removing it without scrub brush.

Power washer will remove it, probably need very fine scrub brush to manually remove it.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, and for responding so quickly.
Richard S, I enjoyed your "new stove and bin" solution.
