Coal Mine Tours?

Hello,

I know the subject is an odd question. But I took the family to Howe Caverns yesterday and I couldnt help but wonder what a coal mine looks like. I enjoyed the tour alot and was just curious if any coal mines are stable enough for such a thing.
Like any new hobby, and in the first year, I am trying to learn as much as I can.
Thanks again,
GR

I believe there is three, we had a get together this year and that was part of it. :D Mike and Chris Murley who are members on this forum are guides on some of the tours.

The one I'm familiar with is the Lackawanna Tour:

Chris or Mike will see this post and be able to provide some other info, they offer there own personalized tours that include tours of old mining areas on the surface as well as the the ones inside the mine: http://undergroundminers.com/tours.html

Moving this to the discussion forum.

There are three Anthracite coal mine tours; The No.9 mine and museum in lansford (near tamaqua), Pioner Tunnel in Ashland, and the Lackawanna Mine Tour in Scranton. I'm at the No.9 on Sundays usually. The best piece of advice I could give you is to take all three tours. Each tour is different as is every tour guide. In other words you will pick up something new at each one.

There is also a Bituminous Coal mine tour near Pittsburgh PA ,called the Tour-Ed Mine.

They have mine tours and a museum of mining and mining life.

A large park surrounds the mine with a few old coal mine cars

and a log cabin.

We visited several years ago and took the mine car into the

mine where they have demos of different type of mining

equipment.
