Seen something about this on the front page of the website, but little information. Anyone here using anthracite for water filtration or know much about it, have links, etc.?

Activated carbon can be anthracite. It can be processed coconut shells or a number of other things too.

Thanks!

I’m going to research this more because it could prove to be very beneficial to me because we have so much trouble with water.

Two wells have caved in because of how they were dug and cased 40 years ago...or lack there of. I may need to drill another well, add on to our holding tank or build another cistern or holding tank, and look into a way to develope a spring across the creek or figure out a way to use anthracite to filter creek water for use....all while perusing the local water authority to bring water down our road.

I remember back when--I had a couple 100 gal. fish tanks & the filter system took charcoal--kept it crystal clear/clean. Ahhhh, American ingenuity!! :)

A gravity water filter can be used for drink water, a cheap solution for that. Forget about the Walmart stuff, get Berkey or similar cheaper makes. Ive used one for years and love it. Those .1 filters for camping... Im thinking Sawyer might be the brand, will work too but take more work and leave a plastic taste. I have both.

Sand will filter water too. Just about anything will filter it some, even old socks, lol

Have no idea what you’re talking about. Clear as in-filtered water.🤪

Fred, I’ve seen some videos of people taking wood and creating charcoal and using that in conjunction with sand and gravel. Seemed to work well.

My problem is how to configure something like this, have it outside, and able to withstand winter temperatures. I wouldn’t think it would need to be on a huge scale, but I need to figure out how big a system for for the gallons I would need...which have not been determined yet.

It's used as replacement for sand filters. It fractures into odd shapes which allows the filter to last much longer.

Google "anthracite filter media"

It is the fines that we all like to bitch about all the time that work the best...

It's the fines from the breaker, anything less than barley which is like coarse sand. The filter media company takes that and will screen it out into multiple sizes. If I understand correctly they layer it so the coarser sizes are on top. Not sure but they may even use barley for really coarse filter. I would imagine there is some kind of cleaning process involved other than water but I don't know exactly what they do.
