That was the old Saint Nicholas breaker. It was located between Mahanoy City and Shenandoah, Pa.

It's been over 30 years since I was inside but I remember it being a steel frame breaker.

Hand Fed Coal Furnace: Harman SF3500 reduced down to 3 grates connected to its own plenum
Coal Size/Type: Rice, Chestnut and whatever will fit through the door on the Harman
Other Heating: Noth'in but COAL! Well, Maybe a little tiny bit of wood

It was actually last winter, one year ago yesterday they knocked it down.
3/15/18 The St. Nicholas Breaker is Gone
Here is a Youtube video of it.

This was the old Blaschak breaker. If I remember correctly this was the biggest anthracite coal breaker ever built.

Sad to see it go.

I drove right by it very often through the Winter months when going into Blaschak, man that thing was huge. There was a historical group that tried to save it but as I understand fell short on the money needed. It was the largest in the World along with the one at Locust Summit asi understood.

One morning I came by last year and it was laid over in a pile — the lady who runs the scales at Blaschak told me it came down the previous day.

A whole lot of $$$$ was there in scrap metal...probably some of that metal made it back here in the US inside our new cell phones. :shifty:
