I have to ask this question to the long-time, devoted coal users. I'm new to this and just purchased a new stove and 4 tons of coal for $275/ton but am getting a bit nervous to already be seeing price increases on coal. I thought $275 was alot when I first started reading this forum but now see users paying over $300. For those of you that have been using it for years, is the price of coal increasing dramatically this year as opposed to previous years and/or do you expect it to become the next  oil?

Coal prices are increasing, like everything else we buy that is transported to it's end user, simply because of the huge increases in gasoline/Diesel fuel. Coal itself is pretty stable, price-wise, but of course it is not immune from these costs.
There is no chance of coal becoming the next oil, as you say, because of our huge coal reserves & pretty consistent demand.
(Of course, if we elect a President whose family made it's fortune in coal rather than oil, all bets are off! )

(Sorry.....couldn't help myself!)

For me right now its same price as it was last year in the fall, many of the people on this forum are far away from the source and the increase in the fuel price will factor into that. Generally speaking the price has always gone up locally between the latter part of August into mid September. So I can't aswer your question until then. I wouldn't start panicking unless the price for the product itself starts going up drastically.

My local dealer has a pretty standard markup over his cost, so when trucking goes up the coal goes up, but it isn't influenced by investors trading in oil futures so it isn't anything like oil.

Last year the coal from my supplier was $175 a ton. I called him the other day and he is selling it for $200 a ton now.

On a side note electric rates are expected to soar in Pennsylvania starting in 2010. Electricity is huge bill for breakers. I believe the bill at Hudson was in the tens of thousands per month.
Rate caps are scheduled to expire in 2010 and 2011 for Pennsylvania's electric customers. The looming 8- to 63-percent increases have drawn the attention of state lawmakers, and Fajt said the administration is leaving negotiations over the details to the General Assembly.

We are up to $300 per ton picked up here in NY, still a good buy compared to other heat.

I do not have a stove yet, and am doing my homework.

I live in Franklin Ma. I called a place in Milford Ma to ask the price and they said "$345/ton".

I am hearing a lot of lower priced like "Summit" and so forth. For Eastern Ma is there a larger supplier I should
be looking to? I am considering buying a forced hot air Anthracite furnace. Have no idea about that either.
Possibly replace my exisiting oil. Also wondered about the "combo" oil/anthracite furnace.

I also have central AC. Not sure if that is an issue.

Will take all advice and will start one thing at a time.

Thanks

Alan

Alan as you get closer to Northeast Pennsylvanian the price drops. If you come here and get it yourself it's about $130 ton in bulk. Bagged coal cost almost double that here too. $300+ is what you're going to pay in your area especially if its bagged.

Try you local Aubuchan Hardware. They sell bagged Blaschak in 40lb bags or by the 60 bag pallet. Not sure what their new price is now.
