I was just reflecting upon one I came across somewhere a number of years back. I seem to recall reading about someone who cut a 6" hole directly into the back wall of the firebox of their hand fired stove (somewhere above the firebricks and coal) and then installed what appeared to be a standard Fields R/C 6" barometric damper at that location. That's about the oddest thing I can recall. I don't recall ever hearing if it worked, or if it led to any problems.

Although not a modification of the stove itself, the Keystoker vented with PVC was definitely strange.

PVC Chimney Liner

Another that comes to mind is the Hotblast handfed furnance that had two flat bed stokers fitted into the sides.

I just re-read that thread.
Google now finds "Melting temperatures range from 212°F to 500°F (100°C to 260°C) depending upon manufacture additives to the PVC. The linear expansion coefficient of rigid PVC is small and has good flame retardancy, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) being up to 45 or more."
Makes me think I should line my Class A SS pipe with PVC to avoid long-term deterioration. Stack temperature above the baro rarely gets above 250. In fact if I lengthened the flue path with additional metal stovepipe, I suspect it would be impossible to get it over 250 by the time it finally reaches the chimney. Besides, a little melting would help the PVC fuse to the SS and make a good seal. ;)

OK where are you going to come up with 7" O.D. PVC ?

not that i'm knocking the idea but i like to source prospective material before i start going beyond the first " what if"

saves time in the long run.

Holy cow! Talk about excessive secondary air. On a cold day burning hard that would send at least half the heat up the chimney.

I'm pretty sure this is to be found here on the forum somewhere, complete with pictures. I just don't know how to find it.

Guess we know what you will be working on today. ;)

Tip: Sometimes I use Google to find things on this site. You go to the Google search page, and enter something like this:

cut hole in back of stove site:coalpail.com

If you want that exactly, enter: "cut hole in back of stove" site:coalpail.com

If you want two specific things, enter: "cut hole" + "back of stove" site:coalpail.com
