US take notice. They have worked out that solar and wind won't make it. To late of course. BIG problem for them.
We need more EVs

We are in a struggle to use as much energy as we can without hurting our selves . It will not be as easy solution and will take a generation of time to make progress

One of the largest coal power plants ...Towers at Nanticoke ...
http://www.680news.com/video/2018/02/28/towers-at ... detonated/
This was directly across Lake Erie from my house and now I can't see the stacks anymore.
All summer we could see the coal ships coming into unload coal for this plant.

Here's their supply....

"Over the past decade, wind, solar, bioenergy, hydro, refurbished nuclear and natural gas-fired resources have replaced Ontario’s coal fleet"
"The largest percentage of distributed generation, also known as embedded generation, is from solar facilities."
They have replaced 100% of the coal plants...

oh great, what are we going to do to keep THOSE nuts from coming down here to steal jobs ??
Hawaii is about to blow up, we'll be having them landing on the west coast in row boats soon enough too.

It can work both ways. Imagine a poor out of work VA coal miner deported to HI. No surfing skills, no experience with recreational drugs and no suntan at a time when SPF chemicals are being banned there to save the reefs. Destined to spend the rest of his life on the beach gazing at tanned lovelies, perhaps signing up for yoga classes.... it's a horrible way to go. Something has to be done. Oh the volcanoes, they come and go, no problem.

How can they afford to run....

They have to cut their costs by 50% just to be even , not even possible .
“As LCOE(Levelized Cost of Energy) values for alternative energy technologies continue to decline, in some scenarios the full-lifecycle costs of building and operating renewables-based projects have dropped below the operating costs alone of conventional generation technologies such as coal or nuclear. This is expected to lead to ongoing and significant deployment of alternative energy capacity.”
https://electrek.co/2018/05/10/egeb-crypto-solar- ... aper-coal/
"A cold war-era law might be revived to subsidize failing fossil fuels companies. The U.S. Energy Department might use a law dating back to the Korean war to protect inefficient energy and utility providers that happen to employ a lot of people in key electoral states. The first beneficiary might be FirstEnergy, officially bankrupt since March 31. This help might take many forms, including:"
“loans and loan guarantees or purchase commitments. It could also be used to help specific regions or plants.”
The power plants of First Energy Generation are on life support , why run these when cheaper
power can be sourced on the grid ?

Electricity has not risen much over the last 40 years , but people use a
larger amount for what they want to do.
https://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/annual/showt ... ?t=ptb0810
Per this chart electric is now cheaper in real costs than in 1960 , over
55 years . $0.14 , down in 2011 to $0.1041 per KWHr .

I can see you weren't living in the New York and the area covered in this chart, which has about one in ten Americans.
https://www.bls.gov/regions/new-york-new-jersey/n ... htm#chart2
When I bought my house on Long Island in '79 it was $.12KWH. When I left in '92 it was $.16KWH. Now it's almost $.20KWH. I'd say that's gone up quite a bit.
Even though it is comparatively low, my summer rate here has gone up about 50% in 26 years and more than 100% in the winter months.
Paul
I never saw that chart before and shows how consistently NY City area is
above average in all costs ." Compared to the rest of the country, New
York's cost of living is 80.00% Higher than the U.S. average."
https://www.bestplaces.net/city/new_york/new_york
The last chart is interesting in that electric is the same price in 2018 as in
was in January 2017 so there was no increase . So in real $ you now pay less
than 1960 cost of $0.14 KWHr . Most of the price change was in the delivery
charge not the generation cost . Your rate went up 1.7% a year .
I have lived in WNY since 1980.
