Even tho the OATs are still in winter mode, participation seems to have drastically fallen off. I thought in the past, when members shut their stoves down, they would give a "courtesy" goodbye for the season. I haven't heard of too many members yet who have retired their stoves for the duration. Maybe people are still busy, but are still burning. I know I'm good for at least another week, depending on mother nature. How 'bout you :?:

Shutdown?! It feels more like January than mid March. 15 degrees and windy.

I shut my hand fed stove down mid Feb & am planning not to fire it ever again except for emergency use. Too many chores to do by myself. My EFM coal boiler can & will do the job, especially with some much needed house improvements... if & when they get done.
Morning temps here lately have been in the low 20's ,so heat is certainly needed & welcome yet.

I do miss the bone warming radiant heat that the hand fed stove added to my house, but i do not miss the extra chores involved with keeping it lit thru the winter.

Still burning and is the only heat going in the house, will probably be running through mid April just to take the chill off...we can always open windows!

I have been fooled before and then shutdown to early only to use a lot of HO. May 15th on the dot is our formula unless mother nature is being unusually cruel.

The T-Stats will most likely be turned off in about mid-May here. Certainly no sooner than early May.

Me too. My first year with coal I quit burning on April 1st, and burned nearly an entire tank of HO the rest of April.

This year I will probably be out of coal at the end of April, so after that the Heat Pump will stand in.

I have no set date to turn off my t-stats in my house & my shop...if a cold rainy day comes thru here in late June,my heat will be on .... EFM520 heat of course. I have no liquid sand to burn.

We are over the "hump" for sure but I'll have the furnace lit for at least another 7 weeks. Unless of course there is an unprecedented warm spell of some sort.

That's my concern too CN. This winter seems to be dragging on. Unlike previous winters where we'ld have 70° oats in March or april, doesn't appear that'll be the case this season.
And Dave, one question I have with you people with boilers for DHW, does that mean you're burning coal year round? Are the coal furnaces insulated from radiating heat in the summer months?

Yes, i burn coal each day of the yr.,that also makes it easy to have heat available in late June or early Sept when needed.

I have my boiler wrapped with 2" foil board to keep the heat in.

I would have run out of my 5 ton today or tomorrow, so I bought 15 bags at the hardware store yesterday. Dennis

Looks like my truck, last Saturday Dennis. At the pace we've been at so far, I might need a refill in another week.
(Course your truck has more "class" than mine)
