Extended Power Outage
I was surprised that train bridge was open at the time it happened, about 8pm. The two adjacent car bridges (Hatem & Tydings) were closed from about 4pm to midnight due to the wind. And the train cars were empty tankers so they were not hard for the wind to throw over.
A train in the Lincoln Univ area also had a couple cars get blown over.
I made a trip to the Jersey shore yesterday, Cape May area, and the tree damage around here was much worse than there at the DE Bay.

I have 2 Gennies, 1 5000 watt Honda for running most everything, and a little Champion 1400 watt for running the Keystoker overnite, it is a real sipper with the gas. Gallon almost 10 hours.

Ah, that is the perfect scenario right there. Two generators, a small one for overnight to run the coal appliance, the other to power the house during the day. Nice.2001Sierra wrote: ↑Mon. I’ve got a 25,000 watt PTO powered off the tractor, runs the whole shebang and then some.
But of coarse, I’ll never loose power again lol

+1. We have a big well pump and you don't want to brown that out. My 5000 will not do that with out bogging down so water is on 1 hour a day (three extrols) driven by a Predator 11,000/13500. Other than that the little Champion does fine.and a little Champion 1400 watt for running the Keystoker overnite, it is a real sipper with the gas.

I have that same Champion generator. After Sandy I learned my days of moving a 5k generator around are behind me. The Champion can run my boiler, refrigerator and lights. it's quiet, sips gas and is light. I got to use my Champion last October for the first time and it worked great. Luckily during this past storm I didn't lose power. The generator is so small I store it in a plastic tote from Walmart.

I did the same thing for years and I agree its only dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. I never had a problem but forget to turn off that main breaker and you might blow a lineman off of the pole. Or the power comes back on and the genny goes into orbit. A simple lockout to backfeed safely would be a nice addition to your setup. I made the decision to get a whole house automatic genny with transfer switch so I didn't have to drag a genny 100' through the snow or go outside in a blizzard to refuel. In the middle of a storm, pitch black, raining, snowing, disoriented because you were awaken in the middle of the night, it would be easy to forget a step and have a problem.Lightning wrote: ↑Sun. Fortunately, I was prepared for an outage. On Thursday night when the lights went out I dragged the generator about a 100 feet thru heavy wet snow and got it within reach of the breaker box tie in line. It's a powerful genny, 5600 watts continuous with 8700 surge. I have it back feeding the breaker panel thru a 220 breaker which is only dangerous if you don't know what yer doing.

Im thinking about doing one of these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HS2L1G/ref=sspa_dk_ ... rd_w=2O9cF
Easy enough to install for guys using portable gen sets. If you have an auto start gen then it makes sense to use an autotransfer switch.

Yeah that looks like a very good option. I wouldn't want anyone else here to fire up the gen with the current set up of making sure the main and generator breaker are not on at the same time. This looks a lot more user friendly.

Yes that will certainly work but limits the number of circuits you can use and is expensive. Im just talking about a metal slide lock out that in one position allows utility but not gen and just the opposite in the other position. I’ll try to find a pic of one later and post it. While you may not a gen that can handle the whole load at once you can selectively turn on and off circuits as needed.

Here is one for a Square D panel.coalkirk wrote: ↑Thu. Mar. 08, 2018 1:29 pmYes that will certainly work but limits the number of circuits you can use and is expensive. How does that even work? Is it just a manual lock out for breakers?Pauliewog wrote: ↑Thu. Mar. 08, 2018 2:14 pmHere is one for a Square D panel.

**Edit** I just looked it up. That is a cool idea. You would just need to rework the breaker panel to make room for a 2pole in the top right corner. Depending on how the wires were routed into the panel this could be a pain the a$$ to move all of the circuits down a space. Unfortunately for me, my panel is full including the top right so this wouldn't work in my case, good option for others though.
