I don't think there were any pumped storage facilities before Union Electric (now Ameren) conceived and built the Taum Sauk facility in the 1960's. Now there are many pumped storage facilities. And I don't care what they do in Britain - in the U.S. these are investments that private companies have to be able to justify to their shareholders, not tax dollar boondoggles.

You probably don't want to hear any more from me on this, but AFAIK there are shipyard cranes all over the place that can lift more than that. What this thing costs will determine its economic viability, but its engineering aspects look fairly manageable.
