Buying old basement rice coal

If it is free and you don't mind inhaling the dust of loading it into buckets and working for less than minimum wage, then it is a good deal.

Been there twice and wouldn't do it again. Even if was an easy access thing, which neither was by a long shot. First time was about 4 tons of great Jeddo rice. I only offered $50 for it as it cost me weeks and a back. Second time was numerous drums of Met nut ( about a ton) which I only offered $60 for. I once had a coal bin cleanout of my own. I was switching to an oil boiler in a previous house from a shot Keystoker. ( I know, but oil was 80 some cents a gallon). The plumber who did the install burned rice in his shop so they removed it all and paid me close to the going rate for a couple of tons. I think delivered coal was about $115 a ton at the time ( 2001).
